Notes on UV Corona Imaging Cameras incorporating Infrared Thermal Imaging Cameras for Electrical inspections of power lines and other high Voltage (HV) Installations.Also used in Helicopters, these cameras make it easy to detect any faults of electrical arcing, producing corona discharge, which creates Nitric Acid by ionizing the nitrogen in the air, with the consequences of destroying metal securing points and weakening structures. With the use of Helicopters, remote areas can easily be inspected and quickly. The Thermal Cameras capture on screen the heat resulting from overloading of cables and electrical equipment, which eventually leads to unnecessary problems with electrical losses and supply problems. Cracked insulators can also easily be seen by the corona produced during the partial discharge across the weakened structure.Using this technology and incorporating it into one single camera makes it easy to operate by hand or remotely by the use of a digitally stabilized helicopter gimbal. The UV discharge can be detected and seen by these UV Imaging cameras at a distance of 1 km away during daylight, as they are solar blind. Thermal Imaging cameras require that these distances be reduced to 30—50m away for the measurement of temperature in the power cables. High Definition visual cameras are also incorporated for capturing the actual objects for incorporation in reports and analysis. They are also capable of a high degree of zoom for more in depth assessment.
