Notes on Frequency Counters. Frequency counters are used for accurate measurement of frequency and display of sine, square wave and pulse input signals. There are several types of frequency counters which differ in frequency ranges and the number of digits that can be displayed. A digital counter represents the count in digital form. A frequency counter is an electronic instrument used to measure frequency and time. Digital counters are the integrated circuits which are used to count the events in the digital systems or computers. Digital frequency meters display the accurate frequencies that are generated by the signal generators. Frequency counter kits are the circuits that are mounted on a printed circuit board (PCB). Frequency counter kits are used in digital dabbling, transmitter and receiver circuits. Meter counters can count up and down and can also store data with a powerless non- volatile data backup. Pulse counters are used to count people entering a particular place, or can be used for time measurement. Frequency counters are used for wide range of frequency and time measurements and display 10 to 12 digits accuracy frequency measurement. Frequency counters are designed to work on a wide range of radio frequencies. If the frequencies are very high, the frequency counter uses a high speed prescaler that reduces its frequency to operate digital circuitry. Digital counters consists of memory, which can be used to remember the previous states. Digital counters also consists of flip flops. The number of flip flops indicates the number of states it has. Digital counters are classified as synchronous and asynchronous counters depending on the type of clock it uses. Synchronous counters receive one clock simultaneously for all of the flip flops while in asynchronous counters a clock is given to successive flip flops from the output of previous flip-flops. A digital frequency meter operates in the frequency range of 15Hz to 8MHz that is sufficient to troubleshoot digital circuits and it is inexpensive. Digital frequency meters are controlled by a crystal so the calibration is not required. A digital frequency meter is powered by the 9V alkaline battery and provides a display of 4 digit accuracy. Specifications of a frequency counter kit are: dimension of PCB is 4 inch x 2.93 inch, input conditioning amplifier is sensitive to 50mV, it provides input accuracy of ±1Hz. A meter counter can be used in an air conditioning system to find out the number of hours the air conditioner was on and can also be used to show the number of times it was switched off in between. A meter counter can also be used to measure the depth of sea by inserting it inside the sea water. A pulse counter has eight input signals that can count both the falling and the rising edges. Pulse counters mainly consist of a pulse source, which is an electrical device that counts, stores that prepares the result, and a converter that converts electrical state and provide optical display. Frequency counters use a pulse counter to count edges on each channel up to four billion. Frequency counters operate on the principle of gating input frequency into the counter for a predetermined time. A digital frequency meter finds wide applications in industries like to provide high degree of accuracy with RF signals. They can also use digital frequency meters for monitoring level of vibration in heavy equipment. Frequency counters are also used to calibrate other equipment that does not have displays such as a signal generator. |
